Malvern has increased its social problems over the past twenty years. What was once a pleasant suburb of Toronto has become an inner-city of Toronto. This area now has the fifth highest rate of poverty in the city. 50.9% of families live below the poverty line. Subsidized housing is not readily available and many single parents are holding down two part-time jobs just to pay rent and housing costs. Furthermore, recently Malvern residents have had to contend with gang violence, crime and shootings. The strategy in the community of Malvern is to work with children and families to keep the good kids good -- away from seeking affirmation and acceptance in the prevalent gang culture. The Toronto City Mission is partnering with
Toronto Community Housing, Toronto Parks, Recreation and
Forestry and Malvern Methodist Church in Malvern.
