Two Are Better Than One
As much as I try to deny it, I have a tendency to think I don’t need anyone, that total independence is strength. But if you know anything about camp, you know that it is anything but a solo mission. Each day requires teamwork, support from others, and a spirit sustained by God. Every summer, God teaches me something new about Himself or His mission, and this year, it seems to be this:
You cannot do this on your own. And I’m not just talking about trips and lessons and camp days. I’m talking about life. I am reminded of this verse in Ecclesiastes:
“Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labour: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up.”
God made us to do life together. He designed us to be a part of a family that works together to forward His kingdom. Being at camp has brought me to realize that needing support from others is not a weakness. It is leaning into the character God wants for me and stepping out of the way so He can work. Making my Bible lessons, games and activities this summer has opened my eyes to the places where I fall short, but I have found great encouragement in the fact that my team is here to support me. More importantly, I have been reminded of the awesome power of my God, who wants to use me in his great plan, despite my shortcomings.
On the days when I come to camp feeling like I have little to give, what a blessing it is to know that God has placed me in a team that I can count on. What a relief it is to be reminded that I don’t need to try and get by on my own strength. It’s His breath in my lungs.
I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. John 15:5
