Where I Saw God This Summer

This summer is my first time serving as an intern at Toronto City Mission’s Sonshine Day Camp, and already, it has been a journey of growth, challenges, and joy. Being placed at the Jesse Ketchum site, I wasn’t sure what to expect, but God has been teaching me so much through the campers, the team, and even the difficult moments.

At first, I felt overwhelmed. Learning to help lead games and crafts activities, run three Bible lessons about the Ten Plagues, support the kids, and work as a team was harder than I imagined. I wanted everything to go perfectly, but I quickly learned that things don’t always go as planned. There were moments when I felt unsure if I was doing enough or doing things the right way. But even in that uncertainty, God reminded me that He’s in control, not me.

Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.
— Galatians 6:9

One of the biggest ways I’ve seen God at work is through the kids. Some of them came in shy, but as the weeks have passed, I’ve seen them laugh more, engage with the other campers more, and even ask thoughtful questions during Bible time. One camper told me she loves coming to camp and said, “You all make me feel like family.” That touched my heart and reminded me why we’re here.

I’ve also learned a lot from the other interns and the TLCs (our youth leaders). Even though I’m new, they’ve encouraged me and helped me grow. I’ve seen God working through our teamwork and in the way we care for the kids together.

Through this internship, God has blessed me with coworkers I can call friends. This internship has already shown me how much I still have to learn, but also how much God is doing through each moment, even the small ones. I’m excited for what the rest of the summer holds.
