what to say when asking for support
Not sure what to say when telling others about your marathon and fundraising goal? Here's a simple script you can use to explain why you're running, who you're supporting, and how others can get involved. Feel free to personalize it to make it your own!
Hi [Name],
On [Date of marathon], I’ll be running in the Toronto Waterfront Marathon to raise funds for Toronto City Mission (TCM). TCM is a Christian non-profit organization that supports children and youth impacted by poverty in Toronto through programs like Kids In Community and Education Provided In Community. These programs offer after-school activities, tutoring, mentoring, and faith-based support to help kids build life skills, succeed academically and socially, and find hope in Jesus Christ.
My goal is to raise [your fundraising goal], which will help children and youth access these vital programs. Did you know that Toronto has the highest level of child poverty amongst Canadian cities? I’m running because [Insert why you want to support TCM’s preventive programs].
I’d love your support! If you’re able, would you consider donating to help make a difference in the lives of children and youth impacted by poverty? Every little bit helps!

Subject: Help me Run for Kids Impacted by Poverty
Hi [Name],
On [Date], I’ll be running in [5K, Half, Full Marathon] at the Toronto Waterfront Marathon to raise funds for Toronto City Mission (TCM). TCM is a Christian non-profit organization that supports children and youth impacted by poverty in Toronto through programs like Kids In Community (KIC) and Education Provided In Community (EPIC). These programs offer after-school activities, tutoring, mentoring, and faith-based support to help kids build life skills, succeed academically and socially, and find hope in Jesus Christ.
Did you know that Toronto has the highest level of child poverty amongst Canadian cities? TCM is serving three communities, where there is a high population of children and families impacted by poverty- Don Valley Village, Jesse Ketchum, and Orton Park. I’m running this year because [Insert why you want to support TCM’s preventive programs]. My goal is to raise [your fundraising goal], which will help children and youth in those communities access these vital programs.
I’d love your support! Here’s how you can help:
Donate: With $100, you can help fund tutoring for one child for one semester. With $315, you can help fund TCM’s after-school programs so children and youth can receive the support they need. [Add a link to your donation page]
Join the run: Sign up and run with TCM! Register here.
Spread the word: Share my posts to inspire more support.
TCM’s goal is to raise $16000 so 52 children impacted by poverty can attend these programs for free. If you’re able, would you consider donating to help make a difference in the lives of children and youth impacted by poverty? Every little bit helps!
Your donation will be tax-deductible, but most importantly, you will be bringing the hope of Jesus Christ to children in some of Toronto's most vulnerable communities.
Thank you!
