Building Faith and Growing in Connection

Sonshine Daycamp has been a blast. I came into it ready to take on new challenges and grow in faith, and I was not disappointed. I can be on the quieter side when in new places with new people, so doing activities alongside the kids has been a great way to grow.

A fond memory I have took place on a soccer field. All the boys were playing full-field soccer. I was a goaltender, and a kid named Josh was the defense. He wasn’t the most experienced on the field, but he was giving it his all. I was shocked when someone did a big kick, and Josh dove in front of the shot, blocking the ball with his leg. I was even more surprised by what he did on the next play. After recovering from the sting, Josh rushed the offense and kicked the ball away from our net. I would have thought that after a painful block, he would shy away from the ball. I was thrilled to see him doing the opposite. By the end of the game, his leg felt better, and we walked off the field proud of our defense.

This moment inspired me. It showed me that whether in soccer or missions, you don’t need to be the most experienced to have an impact on the field. This makes me think of Proverbs 3:5-6, which reads,

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;

in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”

When God asks us to do something good, we should do it and pray as we go rather than run away in fear. For this reason, whenever I am teaching Bible stories or playing a game with the kids, I take heart in knowing that as I do, God will work through me.

We are currently exploring the story of Moses. As we go through the book of Exodus, I am reminded that the journey to the Promised Land wasn’t Moses’ plan carried out through God. Rather, it was God’s plan carried out through Moses. My prayer is that as we approach the end of the summer, God would use me to carry out the work he’s doing at Sonshine Day Camp.
