Be Strong and Courageous

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.
— Joshua 1:9

This encouraging promise offers reassurance and strength to those facing fear, anxiety, uncertainty, and challenges, assuring them of God's constant presence and support in any situation.

An important element of being strong and courageous is that we trust in the Lord as the giver and provider of our strength. In Joshua’s case, he did not have the answers to the obstacles and hurdles of his life. However, in faith, he managed to move forward. What an encouraging example this is for us, as often in our lives, we are confused and are void of solutions to our personal challenges. But in faith, when we turn to God, He promises that He will be with us regardless of where we are.

God is both omnipotent and omniscient. He possesses the answers and strength that are required to face whatever ordeal may come our way. As He was with Joshua, God will be with us as well!

What does it mean to be strong? It means standing firm when the predicaments in our lives seem enormous. It also means to rely fully on God rather than our personal strengths. And in doing so, we hold tightly onto God’s word and assurances. Further, to be courageous denotes the idea that we continue to move forward regardless, and notwithstanding whatever fears we have been carrying. In other words, we are able to trust God even when our future seems uncertain. Therefore, we obey God’s commands without pause or delay.

Although Joshua lived thousands of years ago, this passage still deeply speaks to believers today. Our lives are indeed full of precariousness and unpredictability. Some of us may be facing extensive personal struggles, some may need to make important life-altering decisions, and others may be beginning new careers with lots of anxiety. However, regardless of what life offers, this wonderful command to be strong and courageous remains germane and appropriate to all life situations!

Our passage in Joshua is a classic and enduring example of God’s presence, strength in our lives. Irrespective of the hardships that lie ahead of us, people of faith have the confidence to withstand and resist, understanding that with God we are never alone! As God was with Joshua all those years ago, He is with us today, shepherding and empowering us for every trial and test we will encounter!

Amen!
