Camp Bronte is up for sale!

On May 25, 1978, after 71 years of camp operations, Toronto City Mission listed Camp Bronte up for sale. The camp sat on 2.59 acres on the NE corner of Lakeshore Road and Bronte Road. With urban development happening quickly around the camp, this once quiet escape from the summer heat was now feeling the pressure to sell and move further out of the city. Camp Bronte was finally sold December 10, 1979. Today, the land is home to the Bronte Village Mall in a busy intersection in the Southeast section of Oakville.

In an excerpt from a document it says:

Toronto City Mission is not looking at the sale of the subject property with a profit motive, inasmuch as all the money that will be realized on the sale, will be in turn reinvested in the new camp site, which will be extremely costly because of the present cost of buildings etc.

These are the young men and women who choose to spend their summers working with mothers and children at the Fresh Air Home summer camp.

This summer, we have 17 summer interns, 18 Missions Teams joining our 9 Outreach Workers. Times have changed, but God continues to work in the lives of children and families, through us.

Toronto City MIssion has been a long time recipient of the Toronto Star Fresh Air Fund. In this newspaper clipping from June 13, 1968, the Toronto Star writes a beautiful article that beautifully paints a picture of the Fresh Air Home at Bronte. Today, our camp is a little different, we offer 6 weeks of Sonshine Day Camp at 4 of our communities.  With the help of our the generous supporters, we are able to provide summer camps to those impacted by poverty, then and now.

79th Annual Report

In the 79 years since Toronto City Mission was established, Toronto had grown to over a million residents, transportation moved from horse drawn vehicles to modern cars, electricity was invented... "but one thing that has never changed has been the heartache and need of humanity, and for this, and this alone, The Toronto City Mission has offered itself, not to work where the pastures look temptingly green but in the difficult places, among those who lives are blighted because of the conditions under which they are forced to live."
